La conquistadora is one of my first points of contact with the community in Surrey. The place references "la conquista" which translates to the conquest, but in this case the conquest comes from the food serve in the place. Food as an entrance to history in relationship to place. This particular restaurant drives my research for the installation. I try to think of the relationship of La Malinche, to the conquest of the Americas by Hernan Cortez, could we call her "La conquistadora". Portrayed always submissive at the side of Hernan Cortez, la Malinche plays many roles in Mexican history, she is the traitor, as well as the translator , and the vilified mother of the "mestizaje". The owner allows me to post the first poster advertising the translations in this location.
